Installing content is very easy and straightforward - the basic three steps apply:
 +
# Download item
 +
# Extract item
 +
# Place (install) item

But there's so much to it!
Yes, custom content for the Sims 3 is fairly complicated...much more so than in Sims 2, but if you follow this guide and read everything carefully, you should be using your new content in no time!

But I actually know what I'm doing...
What's with the name?
Do you? Do you really? If you are good with computers, there is a short version of this FAQ. No nonsense, no coddling, just the facts. Read it here: TS3:Downloading for Smarmy Smartasses.
+
No! No! It is not meant as an insult, we just like the acronym "DFDD". It is just meant to differentiate from TS2's version of DFFI - Downloading for Fracking Idiots, for "beginners" and DFFG - Downloading for Fracking Geniuses, for the "tech-heads".

"Downloading for Downright Dipshits"?
And there is also a Sims 3 version, DFSS - Downloading for Smarmy Smartasses, for the "tech-heads".

Well, the title is just meant to differentiate from TS2's version of [[Game_Help:Downloading_for_Fracking_Idiots| Downloading for Fracking Idiots] - yeah we're a bunch of Downright Dipshits, who else would be playing the Sims 3 except for Sims fans...

Just how stupid do you think I am?
+
Before you download
Very! Well, you're reading this, aren't you?
+
Before you go on a downloading spree, be sure to read these pages. They are basic info that you need to do or learn about only once, most of the time.

This guide assumes you know how to click a mouse, read and follow guided instructions and install programs (you installed the game, right?). It will explain everything else in the simplest language possible. If you are confused about something, reread this guide several times. It really can't be explained any simpler than this!

Organizing content is crucial! Sooner or later there will be a piece of item that you no longer want or is causing issues. If everything is well organized, .package content is very easy to maintain. Again, it is mostly a one-time setup and once you have learned the technique of good organization, there would be less CC redownloads and/or reinstalls that need to be done, and maintaining CC would be a breeze!

This is it! These same basic steps apply for all CC and with all sites, for the most part. Some sites may not zip up the files if they are in .Sims3Pack format, so you just skip the unzipping part. What is essential is reading all the information the creator took the time to type up, as most of the time, it answers all the questions that arose with that particular item.
